SLS questions

Im still going thru all the sls posts, but ?? is will it work for a big person? Im 6'3 360 an to me the physics behind what diagrams I have seen say "don't". I love the concept and simplicity of the SLS and would like to use it, but am afraid I would end up breaking even AMSTEEL. All the premade systems I looked at were only rated to 250lbs. Am I correct on this or just overthinking it?

You should be alright if you use straps from the trees to the point where the tarp attaches. Just my two halves of a cent. I don't have an sls but will when I get some more Amsteel...good luck and hang it low your first time for those test bounces.

Are you wanting a single line for setup simplicity, or the ability to hang with a low hang angle?

An sls is no different than a regular suspension, except everything attaches with just 1 line. If you maintain a ~30* hang angle, you'll have no problem with 7/64" amsteel. If you want to do 5* you'll need something bigger, at least 1/8" and maybe larger.

If you know what your target hang angle is we can let you know what the force on the suspension, ridgeline, and tree's will be based on your weight, and make a suggestion.

You'll have to keep in mind tree strength can be a factor too.

My SLS is at 0* because in summer breezy mode I make a trapazoid using tarp ridge line and suspension all of one piece in conjunction with the hammock's structural ridge line.

It is all made of 1/8" Amsteel and feels solid when loaded. I weigh 165#.

I used the hang calculator, and everything checked out with the 30* angle. I guess I just can't get it to click in my head that 7/64 or 1/8" cordage will hold me. But then again the braided paracord did hold me, albeit lots of stretch. I just did my first hang this weekend so I'm still new to all this.
I like the SLS concept because all you have to do is hook a single line to the straps for both the tarp and the hmmk, simple, fast..whats not to like? LOL
I have a pair of straps being shipped to me this week, so I will be hanging again this weekend if the weather isn't too bad. I'm hoping that they will eliminate the stretch/ sag problems I had with the first hang.
I'm still doing a bunch of reading on the forum here about SLS, RL, Suspensions and the likes to learn more about it. Sometimes it just helps to ask questions.

PS. Just redid the CALC for the 5* angle and got 2151.32# on the cord tension. Guess I better make sure my angles are right. LOL

Mike, thanks for the link to that calulator. I just completed my DIY one line setup and been wondering what the loads would be at the diffrent angles.

Mike- Im sure not what kind they are, I got them in trade from a hanger on another forum.(BCUSA) They are 30' x 1" ,she said they had big trees out there.(WA) I am guessing nylon material. She is on this forum too, but I don't know her screen name. She said she'd hook me up with a set of whoopies too. Ilooked at the CALC and don't want less than a 20* angle or else the force really starts piling up. I want try the SLS but don't want to waste money on AMTEEL if Im just going to end up snapping it.

ok maybe I won't snap it! LOL I guess I didn't realize the strenghth of it. For my size I don't think I'd go below 1/8" but even that is smaller than paracord, and I usually carry about 100' of that. Thanks mike
