I'm thinking I was just lucky with that #2 grommet. Having the ring be large enough is certainly one necessary condition. Another seems to be having the edge of grommet be very close to the webbing so that the cord that is being compressed by loops is surrounded "enough" by those loops. Even with the #2 I have, orient those loops on a different side of the grommet where there is a larger edge of webbing and it doesn't work.

A pure ring of some kind is going to be the best bet.

Speaking of Dutch, doesn't he / didn't he make Dutch Donuts of some kind once?

Just a caution. I was using a similar suspension weeks ago when my only option was to anchor on a shelter's beam: Maybe ten feet up and nine apart. This gave me a very deep angle of hang and the wraps (I use four) around the ascender ring slipped repeatedly. I ended up using a MSH and a toggle as a kind of stopper behind the ring. Lesson for me is that the ring works great only so long as I can hang my hammock at or near the proper angle.

Just for S&G's I made 2" diameter continuous loop from 1/8" amsteel and made a quick test. From a purely technical point of view it worked. From a practical point of view not so much. The ring as you might expect gets contorted into a horrible looking mess but it does grab hold of the amsteel quite nicely. After you lie in it has a pretty good grip on the line with a certain resistance to moving but it adjusts easily enough. After a full night of hanging it may not work so well. Mostly putting this out to save someone else the effort if they were thinking about it.
    Good luck,

That would likely get real tough to release I would think.

I wish you guys would stop this! I have absolutely no need for this but I can't stop thinking about it if you wont let it go...

I'm the same. I don't even want to use it, I just can't help but play with the idea.

With that in mind...if you take the bottle opener off, this 1" split ring is about 2 grams and held my 185 lbs...IMG_3233 (Small).JPG...although I don't recommend it at all. I scares me to stress amsteel over that thin of a cross section.

The SMC descending ring seems to be an excellent compromise of light weight vs. cross section diameter.
