Tried this out with a cheap carabiner and mason's line. Wow. This is a neat setup. You could attach the hammock exceptionally close to the 'biner or ring and thus have all usable length of your rope of choice.

Also using a carabiner you would have a spot to clip in a UQ or hang a stuff sack from, etc... Just a thought. I want to try this now with a better carabiner and amsteel and actually hang from it.

Great, ill try this out. My setup goes, end channel with a small continuous amsteel loop with a rap ring on it. From the rap ring is a SRL and a woopie. Now how do I replace the woopie and us the existing ring in this system, larks head to the ring I'm thinking???i can't see it yet.

You'll have to disconnect the hammock from the ring, and hook it to the line that is wrapped around the ring. That also probably means you'll need to disconnect the srl from the ring as well.....not sure. But basically the hammock needs to pull on the line wrapped around the ring or it will not grab the line that is passed under the wraps. Your weight in the hammock does the "grabbing".
    Good luck,

Just curious...there are several items on that page. I assumed you were talking about the aluminum rings, but noticed after ordering a pair that they're not climbing rated. I figure this usage isn't likely to put the kind of breaking force that a pair used with webbing straps would, but has anyone used these aluminum rings for this purpose under an adult load (230lb )? If not, worry not, I'll hang over an air mattress in the basement and see what happens. Just curious if it's been tried yet.
    Thanks,
    Erik

I think DIY gear sells them as well

I used this method on my HH this weekend at the Texas hang and it was great. My son used it all weekend with no slips or adjustments. Inspected the rope after and couldn't see any damage at all. This is how we will hang the HH from now on, very simple. Thanks!

I set it up last night on my tablecloth diy and love it! It's so freakin' elegant. It's also much easier to make this than fabricating a whoopie. I made two ends in about 10 minutes. Adjustment is very easy, and the cinching seems secure. It will definitely take a couple of longer test hangs to see if it will work long term. I did notice some compression of the amsteel where the line went through the coils, but after milking the line, it looked normal again.
I set mine up sort of like the OP with a dutch hook (the large one?) on one end of the rope (locked brummel) and pulled in the other end on itself. Both lenghts of amsteel are about 15 feet, but I think I'm going to cut them down a bit after some practice hangs. I'll get some pics up soon for critique and instruction.
Thanks to the OP for this...

Has anyone tried this with Dynaglide instead of Amsteel?

I'm heading up to my lab (read - uninsulated room above my garage where we store all sorts of crap, including my camping gear) to do just that. Pics in a little bit...

    Buh-bye whoopie slings?

So I just undid my Dynaglide whoopies to try this out. I have a locked brummel on end and just left the other end as it was after I cut it. I used a 1.5 OD hardware store welded aluminum ring (insert scared emoticon here) and created the SRS a la Bonepile. I hung from this on one end (the other end is the WBBB webbing) for approximately 5 minutes, slowly swaying. After about 2 minutes of obsessing over whether or not I'd come crashing down, I quickly forgot I was hanging on the ring and SRS. The Dynaglide held albeit a little compressed as others have noted.

After this little experiment, I am rethinking my suspension system...
