Yosemite and the JMT hanging question

I'm heading to Yosemite in May. Sadly I'm only able to get 2 days, 1 night of backpacking so I'm going to do an out and back on the JMT from Happy Isles.

Where would be a good hanging spot, Sunrise Lakes? Should I push out farther? I already have a permit.

    good pick!

I hiked JMT from Toulmne meadows to the valley last summer and wow, it is an amazing trail! I didn't get a chance to take the side trip to sunrise lakes though. if you are able to get up there in May I would recommend staying at upper cathedral lake. But I'm sure any place you choose in Yosemite backcountry will be quite amazing!

Sunrise Lakes is a great place to stop. My 2 cents is to recommend the second of the three lakes as it's mid popint between the trail to Cloud's Rest and the High Sierra Camp and in most cases less crowded. You can push on to Cathedral Lake (making for one long day of hiking) if you want, but there is some restoration projects going on that limit access. Either way, it's a short trip mostly downhill to Toulumne Meadows for exit or a more direct exit to a trail head off the highway. Depending on the hatch be prepared for skeeters.

    Have a great time.
Happy Trails to one and all.

Think I've decided to head to Merced Lake and hang by the river outside of camp after reading some trip reports and talking to a ranger.
