    My First Quilt

I finally bought my first quilt today. It was actually purchased for use on a thru hike this coming year on the Colorado Trail under a ground tarp, but will certainly be my 3 season go-to for hammock use too.

Cool. Congrats on your first quilt! May there be many more ahead.
What fabric choice did you go with?

    Thumbs up Why not hang?

You can hike the Colorado Trail with a hammock.

PM me if you have concerns or questions.

    Check my gallery.

Epic exterior - Taffeta interior. Custom length for me at 6'1" and 1 oz overfill.

It was a tough choice between the 1 0z Taffeta and 0.8 Pertex Quantum. I went for the durability and softness.

Sounds nice. Did they whack you for the custom work?

As for the CT, I haven't done much of it yet just little chunks (really little), but from what I've seen Food is right; no need for ground dwelling.

I'm going SUL with a total base weight of under 4 pounds (even including my camera). The hammock gear and insulation weight would have added enough weight that I wouldn't be able to carry enough food on the longest stretch without changing my pack and making some other alterations. Just going to go with what has worked for me in the past, only with a quilt instead of a bag. I can sleep on a rock (and have) and be comfortable otherwise I might have considered a hammock. I guess I just like hiking with next to nothing on my back too much... and I guess (old?) age has a lot to do with it, too.

Since Tom does the work himself, every quilt is custom in one way or another. The only extra cost should be the extra ounce of 850+ down. If I had chosen the 0.8 oz Pertex Quantum it would have been an extra $25. That's the only fabric that Tom charges extra for... the rest are no cost options.

I contacted him about a zero degree Raku and that is basically what he told me.

    Very nice!
I think the epic exterior would be a good choice for that trail too- a little extra insurance...

Please keep us posted on this, AND your trip!
