So being a new hammock guy I thought I would look into some gear. I am an avid outdoorsman and love backpacking and camping and anything outdoors. I went hammock camping last week for the first time but wasn't aware of the proper gear needed. Needless to say I froze my a** off. See my story posted undertrips labeled train wreck. Anyway I am looking at getting good lighthearted to convert from ground to tree. I went to warbonnet because I have heard nothing but good things about them. I priced an under quilt, hammock, and over quilt $800!!! Is there any recommendations that are cheaper? I understand you pay for quality but that's quite a bit and I still need a tarp. I live in Ohio so temps here can get chilly in fall and winter. I don't go out allot in the winter overnight but like to be able o if I want. Currently I use a solo tent and thermarest inflatable and a 0 degree mummy bag. Fairly lightweight overall. Thanks for the help and info.

I have less than $200 tied up in my rig.

ENO DoubleNest with custom Amsteel suspension and tie-down straps as tree straps
DIY Underquilt made from a $5 sleeping bag from a thrift store (no money tied up in modifying it)
DIY GI Mummy Bag top quilt I got for $10 at a flea market (no money tied up in modifying it)

Just use your sleeping bag as a Top Quilt in quilt mode since you have one.
Maybe save your $$ for a UQ....but you can get by with pads for now.

My camera's not up to snuff, but I'll try to describe it. Also consider looking up Poncho Liner Underquilts. I've done one of those, too.

My underquilt, I measured 48" side-to-side and cut straight down the side, leaving the sleeping bag as long as it came. I'm 6'4", so you can never have too much length. I then pushed the batting back a bit and sewed the bag closed where I made the cut.
I then tied a larkshead knot onto each corner to suspend the hammock from the hammock's suspension. It's not perfect, but it'll suffice until I come up with the money for a proper quilt.

The top quilt was easier. I cut off the hood of the mummy bag, sewed it up at the cut, and all done.

as long as you dont mind the weight sleeping bags are easy enough to convert to a UQ and a mummy bag can be a simple TQ. check the DIY forums.

also, if it helps i too have a lot tied up in mine, but only because i wanted to be able to camp year round. if youre a 3 season hanger, i suggest a simple setup of:

ENO DN: ~$60
BIAS bug ned: $65
WL Summer quilt set: $280
"All In One" suspension: $50
WL Big Daddy Tarp: $100

$555 give or take, and you have a huge tarp, an awesome bug net, and a great quilt set (bottom and top)

yeah, not cheap but you get EVERYTHING you need (more or less) you can take a little off here and there if you DIY a PLUQ/TQ or something, but IMO a tarp is a must!
