I've hung on tubular climbing webbing before (assuming it was nylon) and didn't have any significant stretch issues.
Looks like you solved your problem with the Harbor Freight purchase, but thought I'd chime in on the REI webbing. I used to buy their 30' packs of 1" tubular nylon webbing and they work great, especially with cinch buckles. They don't stretch because they're so thick being a tubular construction and meets military specs. However, being so thick is also its major drawback: very heavy compared to polyester webbing options.
I haven't had any problems with the rei webbing. No stretch here.

REI tubular webbing straps are not all nylon. I bought some in poly (by the foot off large roll). It is heavy.
I use it for holding 2 hammocks at the same time. No stretch. They're also 12' each for huge trees.
Did I mention its heavy stuff?

I have made and used several pairs of straps from this material and hung from them more than a dozen times - in hot cold wet and dry conditions since May of this year.
I simply tie a "Water Knot" into one end to make a loop; but you could sew a loop if you prefer.
Also, this is a great way to get a set of straps quickly; however this material is a bit heavier than what is sold by our excellent HF vendors.
Comes in variety of colors - ask the salesperson about inventory in the back- not all colors are on the retail floor.

Yes! This works and does not stretch. Important get the "Mil-Spec" Ask any "rock climber" and they will tell you this does not stretch.

I also use rei tubular webbing and have never incurred a significant problem. For winter hanging I use nylon daisy chains so I can quickly adjust w/carabiners while wearing mittens. And, I also have some 70 feet of tubular webbing from out of date BSA climbing towers. I'll keep on using it.

I bought the digital camo webbing that they had...I bough a small quantity and used the Float test that I read about on this forum. The webbing floated, so presumibly it was poly. It streatched. I had to get up each night to tighten everything up as the webbing stretched.
