    I've done the sleeping bag method, and it worked okay, but at 6'4" and being a dise sleeper, it didn't let the hammock spread adequately for me, so I eneded up being a little cramped. Other than that, for the price, I tend to recommend it to people that can't afford a better option to start with.

    I did use my rectangular sleeping bag as a peapod of sorts down to 28 at the 2nd Annual Florida Hang with a pad under me and my jacket for closing off the head side.
    The foot end already has a small hole area at the end of the zipper, but your idea to close the large opening is a must or you will lose all your heat that way.
