Hey everyone I was wondering if I could get some of your opinions on alternatives to traditional underquilting. I do not own an underquilt yet, but was wondering if there are other effective ways of insulating the under side without selling my firstborn child for a decent underquilt. Any tips you can share would be greatly appreciated!

Alternatives? HH Super Shelters or Speer Pea Pods at TTTG. Od course, the latter is still some big $, but includes significant top side warmth along with great bottom insulation.
I use a picnic or beach blanket, they have one side that is water resistant and the other is fleace, so you can sit on the grass or sand and not sit on moist ground. I got mine at Canadian Tire, for less then $20, but I'm sure you can get them elsewhere. I sewed pleats in both ends so it would conform better to hammock and some shock cord to the ends to attach it. No sewing is nessary it could be glued or stapled. I use it in conjuction with a sleeping bag and it works fine down to 0c or 32f.
Snag an old sleeping bag from friend, relative, goodwill, craigslist. ($0-$20)
Bunch up some fabric and tie with a several feet of levtfover paracord/shockcord/twine. (0$-$10)
Hang from ridgeline & adjust as needed.
Me, I "borrowed" one from my sister, cut up some leftover 550 and am good to the upper 40's.

When I hang in the cold, I'm talking something that can easily handle 0°F or less. I live in Michigan and temps can be unpredictable at times. So far I've gotten away with my current setup, but there was one night when I was caught off guard by the weather and had to bug out at 1am with -20 windchill. ( I had prepared for +20 with no wind, which was what the weather prediction was.) so far I have used a CCF pad on top of a thermal blanket with my MSS on top of all that, and I am quite comfortable in it down to maybe 5°F. Those of you who saw my tarp setup, this is why it's on the ground during winter, so I can pile snow up around the bottom to control the cold. I like the idea of repurposing a sleeping bag though. I might just give that a try. Tanks guys!
A Garlington-type insulator might be an option.
