I took a 45 minute midnight bike ride to a rather small suburban "forest" walkway one time. Locked my bike up and wandered around in the dark until I found a spot with low enough undergrowth. I woke up the next morning hearing what sounded like people very close by. When I sat up, I could see people going for their morning walks/runs.
I think they only way they would have seen me is if they were to stop and happen to be looking in the right direction. I think the forest green tarp helped too .
Sure was surreal waking up to that, though.
The town that I live in has the mighty Mississippi running through the middle of it. Most of it is quite shallow below a dam and there is a series of islands in the middle. The water is usually walkable in the summer. I have set up several times on a narrow island. It is very cool at night to hear the water running on all sides and the animals moving about the river. All while have a distant view of the local college campus. Great fishing as well.
In my city of Edmonton Alberta, there are many ravines that wind their way to the North Saskatchewan river, and most of them have parts that run through industrial urban places . It would be ver y easy

"HANGING OUT" has taken on a whole NEW MEANING
There are large state forests here (220,000 acres) that, unlike the National Forests, do not allow dispersed camping.
However, there is one in particular here that is about 35,000 acres with 36 miles of backpacking trails. It's about an hour away from me and I hit it for weekend overnighters due to time constraints. It's perfect!
They have a shelter system which must be reserved through that Reserve America fiasco, which does not recognize the backpacking shelters and their one night stay rule. To rent one for an evening takes about 2 hours of talking to supervisors, then for every night at a different shelter, it's a whole other charge. To plan out 2-3 shelters, you must pay the fees over and over.
There have been little side trails I have followed and found some great little stealth sites which have been used for years.
So yes, I do stealth camp in the middle of this 35,000 acres here in WI and could do so easily at another 6,000 acre park close to my home. I prefer the dispersed rules of the National Forest, but for a quick overnighter, it doesn't pay to drive that far.
very interesting post to me.. do you have a picture?
There was an Old Man with a owl,
Who continued to bother and howl;
He sat on a rail, And imbibed bitter ale,
Which refreshed that Old Man and his owl.WOO
