    Stealth Urban Camping

    Every other weekend one of the HF members ( LarryBourgeois) and I usually head out to some remote wooded area of Crown Land (known in the US as Public Land) for some hammock hanging combined with fishing, hunting, or just good old fashion lollygagging. Some weekends we don’t have the time to travel so we decide to stay within the city for some urban camping. It’s amazing how you can be hanging in parkland not more than 30 feet from a well-used trail with dozens of people passing by and not one soul notices you.

    Does anyone else ever hang in their local greenbelts or the wooded areas of city parks?

    How about sharing a story or two.

    I haven't done it, but have considered it after a midnight shift in the summer, just don't know if it would be quiet enough, or if I would be safe enough...

    I have done it for many years, if you are female, you really need to be careful. I have had some really concerning things happen over the years. I am always very careful not to draw attention to myself when in public places, I am also careful not to get in places that morph after dark into a clandestine meeting place.

    There are some very dangerous humans occupying public places.

    I sort of pass out when I get in my hammock, so I am not really sensitive to noise, except barking dogs, radios or kids.

    Highly interested in doing this! I have mapped trail-less places and with Google Earth - have discovered ways of hiking in and out. Just a touch of research and parks and locked lands for conservation - pop. I have the UL gear and there is one or two more pieces to hide the location.
    There was an Old Man with a owl,
    Who continued to bother and howl;
    He sat on a rail, And imbibed bitter ale,
    Which refreshed that Old Man and his owl

    You are right about Google Earth being THE tool to find new stealth hang'n spots, everywhere. It's even better than doing a slow fly over, in a small plane. You can zoom down until you are right over the spot you want and "read" the terrain so there are very few surprises when you get there in the flesh. lb
