I have had a couple of nights out in Edinburgh without any bother. I was planning a long distance walk and without suitable trees in my garden wanted to try things out. My first overnight was near the Edinburgh zoo but being up a hill near a busy road was quite noisy. Not realising a mummy bag alone would not work at about 4C I had a bit of CBS. So a bit of reading of this forum and a bit of a look at Shug's videos and I added an inflatable 3/4 sleepmat and some reflective windscreen material and went back out to a local golf course in the middle of the City which was much quieter. That was much better but sill a little cold at times so I chopped up and old synthetic summer sleeping bag and made an under quilt for the actual walk which worked pretty well. I have put a report on here http://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/Forum...p?f=25&t=26347
It will probably be spring before I am out again, unless a down underquilt arrives for Christmas which will require another urban outing.

Urban stealth camping sounds like it could be fun, but I don't know if I have the nerve to setup in a place where I might get some unwelcome visitors. I don't mind backpacking and spending nights alone in the woods. I'm just unsure about local city parks. But I do want to hear some stories!

I like this idea. I would also like to hear some more stories. Anyone ever tried it in the Montreal, QC area?

This is beautiful country, some good water front camping areas as well. It is within easy driving distance, and I have known this area for years. Guess what? For whatever reason, I just never think of it as a place to go, so thanks for reminding me that a great place is quite near by.

I don't think I'd ever do the local parks - that's too obvious. But if you start taking notice as you go about your daily business, there are patches of undeveloped land in most towns which are too dense, steep, or rocky to be usable (well, to most folks!) I wouldn't camp anywhere I thought there was a chance of foot traffic.

Kinda like being hidden in plain sight when you've staked out a claim in no-mans land.

I grew up in Montreal, the hill sides on Mount Royal would be ideal.

I love this idea and have camped, but not in my hammock, in a lot of parks and urban areas.
Just gotta watch out for cops or you could get a vagrancy charge!

It's crossed my mind more than a few times, but I have not done it yet. I also prefer to get as far away from the city sounds as I can.

    I got a story

I attended the University of Wisconsin-Milwuakee for Ceramics and painting. I would usually do most of my work in the studios at night when I could spread my work out and turn up the music without having to worry about distracting others. This meant I was up between 8pm and maybe 5am most nights working. I still had regular classes during the day and I lived about 25 minutes from school. I discovered that I could save 6 dollars worth of gas each day if I just spent nights or afternoons sleeping at school. However, I would not settle for sleeping on chairs in the hall, or tables in the studio. There was a park near campus that I could sleep at during the early hours each day maybe 4-10am where I could set up just 30-40 feet from the road or trail and not be seen. The students sleeping hunder tables or on various other pieces of furniture were really missing out. I have even set up in rooms or hallways in the middle of the night for quick naps.

Thanks Woolman. I will have to take a look. A lot of high traffic areas, but what a place to wake up.
