    Salutations from Thunder Bay, ON

I am an ultralite backpacker who especially tries to make the shelter as lite as possible. I used to exclusively use a kifaru paratarp with my trekking poles as supports, but the more I backpack with it (or any ground shelter), the more cases I find myself in an unfavorable situation with terrain. Thus, I have decided to give hammocks a try. Being the UL freak I am, I have bought a grand trunk nano-7 and whoopie slings. For the record, yes I know about the weenie hammock, but I like the grand trunk better. While I have yet to go backpacking with my hammock, I have slept in it in my backyard at night. The results? I am now hooked on hammocks! I still bring my kifaru, but chiefly as a rain fly, and will only now use it as a shelter when no trees/supports are around (canyons, mountain peaks, grasslands etc. all of these are near thunder bay). I still have a lot to learn, but that is why I am here! Hope to meet lots of hammockers while on the forums, especially those near my area, although I doubt there are many canadians here. Prove me wrong please

Doesn't look like there will be any excuse for a beard this year, on the other hand I did just spend an hour watching old Molson commercials. I am not sure which makes me more sad

Welcome aboard, from that country beneath you. Canada is well represented here, most likely the second best represented country on the boards.

I come from the same backpacking style as you and switched to hammocks for the same reasons. I'll never go back to the ground! Hang around here and ask questions and you will be able to go about as light in a hammock as you did before once you figure out a few tricks.

And yes, there are a lot of Canadians here on the forums, many from Ontario.
BTW, welcome from Florida. We had 3 Canadians camp with us down here this year.

I've been backpacking off and on since Boy Scouts, especially again as my son went through Scouting. We both picked up hammocks a few years ago, but experienced how cold they can be in a stiff wind on a cool day. With my son in college and me a few years older, I'm trying to go backpacking every few months. I am just beginning to learn and experiment with how light I can pack. Certainly not ultralight, but learning to take only what I need and purchasing a few pieces of lighter gear.

I hope you continue to enjoy your UL hammock experience. And share with us what you learn, for those of us still playing with the idea of UL backpacking with a hammock.

    Welcome from Augusta GA.

welcome from a fellow Thunder Bayite!! There's a few hammockers in the Bay and slowly but surely we're winning others over. Most of the hammockers I know are kayakers and not hikers, but some of us do both.

Wow, I didn't know there were so many canuks here! And I'm glad to see someone other than myself from TB! I am also a kayaker and canoer, as lake superior calls my name every day :P. boundary waters canoe area wilderness is my favorite place in the world to do all these outdoorsy stuff, so I hope to meet some hammockers there. And for the record, MOLSON IN THE HOUSE!!!
