Using a Platy for this would kind of scare me.

I've had 2 of those develop leaks for no apparent reason. I think it's very important to point out that it's risky enough taking water (even hot) to bed with you when temps are hostile. What are you going to do if you, your clothing, your quilts, and your hammock get wet when temps are below freezing? You probably won't notice until the water has had a chance to soak several items and cool down. That's a lot of push-ups and jumping jacks to do to get and stay warm.

I always start thinking worst case scenarios when I'm doing something like this and I try to minimize those risks as much as possible. In this instance, I choose the most reliable container I can; that ain't no Platy.

Thanks for the advice regarding the Platy. I've only recently starting using them (Hoser 1 & 2 liter) but haven't had any problems. I've been sealing them with a standard screw top soda bottle while in transportation with no leaks thus far. Perhaps placing it in an inflated drysack would would serve as a leak protecter and maybe regulate the heat better. I also looked at the Platy site, and they actually give advice on boiling a platy.

Where did you find the write-up on the site? I'd be interested and open to seeing what they say. I looked around but couldn't find it.

Didn't Michele use her Platys for hot water bottles on the AT? I think she had problems eventually but never anything catastrophic.

I have used a hard Nalgene with no problem but a knock-off leaked at the cap. Solved that in the short term with a small piece of saran wrap over the threads before putting the cap on. Solved it in the long term by introducing the knock-off to the trash can.

My son had a regular, rubber hot water bottle spring a leak this past week but it did have several years of almost nightly use during the winter on it so you really can't complain. They regulate the heat pretty well but are too heavy for hiking. I just don't appreciate the hardness of a Nalgene, even stuffed inside a sock.

I'm thinking of using a nalgene flask as a hot water bottle. Seems like a flat flask type bottle would work fairly well for hot water bottle use.

hmmm... how to ask this delicately... Well here goes...

What does the warmth do to the void trigger? We all now the old put the hand of the sleeper in a pan of warm water and await the fireworks. I think part of flamingo's hesitancy has to do with the confused urge to void. I know I have a similar concern. Is it a legitimate concern?

I think that is an issue when the warm water is introduced to someone who is asleep and acclimatized to their surroundings. If one were to begin their sleep session with warmth in the nether regions I don't think it is as much of an issue. I can't say it made me need to wee wee any more than usual.

I wondered about that the first time I tried this method, but it has never been an actual problem. I suspect that might vary from person to person, though. Perhaps trying it in a backyard hang is the best method for this concern.

    worth a try.

It will definitely cool off faster...less volume to begin with, and more surface area for that volume. I'd think about carrying one of those around if needed during the day, and go with the bigger mass of a 32 oz bottle at night.
