    Question

When you put the boiling water in your hard sided nalgene (I have a 1 qt Army canteen), do you fill the boiling water ALL the way up to top, with no space between the water and the lid? Or do leave some space between the top of the water and the lid to allow for expansion?

I do NOT use boiling water. Boiling water behaves very differently. I use hot water. Boiling water can potentially warp the soft nalgenes. I use hot water either in a nalgene or stainless steel bottle. Beware the old bottles with BPA because temperature extremes cause excess release of BPA's.

    thanks for the info.

Do you put the hot water ALL the way to the top or leave air space at the top for expansion?

Not sure to be honest, I think I leave some airspace.

Me, I squeeze all the excess air out. But I'm using the "cantene", which is soft sided. Never leaks and drapes over my femoral artery for instant warmth.

Has any one tried this with a platypus water bladder. They say they are dishwater safe so imagine they could handle the hot water. Was thinking of getting one for a gravity filter. Would be cool if it could serve two purposes.

I know the Nalgenes function because they have a very high temp rating so as not to release BPAs and what not(Although some types are BPA free. I would think that Platys don't have as high of rating but if they are dishwater safe, who knows.

I know people are saying to put it on your femoral artery but wouldn't it be better to put it. On your neck on your corotic artery because it is bigger and closer to your skin.

Ide bet its more of a comfort thing and your legs can hold the bottle.
Also more Central and it would be under your quilt which would trap the heat in and not let it be wasted.
