I just read this entire thread, wow it was a long one. Previously, I had decided against nalgene as a water bottle because of it's weight, however this thread has convinced me to have at least one for night time heating purposes when unexpected temps occur. For anyone who hasn't read the whole thread, platy's have been reported to leak on more than one occasion. Gatorade can't take the heat and warp/melt. Knock off nalgene shrinks and warps. Some have been very happy with metal containers, watch out for painful heat transfer, put it in a cozy or couple of socks.
Years ago I used hot rocks from the campfire (not wet rocks) and wrapped them in a towel. A water bottle that you bring with you seems now to be a better choice and one that I will certainly try.

Do you ever have any problems with the nalgene leaking in your sleeping bag? i have been wanting to try it, but my dad says that it will ruin my sleeping bag. (I have a 0* down if that makes a difference)

I haven't had a problem with a nalgene leaking but if you are worried, you can put it in a ziploc bag for extra piece of mind.
Keep movin', keep believing and enjoy the journey!

This was an awesome piece of advice. I used it on a chilly night a couple weekends ago and my feet have never been so comfy.

I wish I would have done this at the last hang I was at but rest assured I will do it when I can.

I haven't read this whole thread so excuse me if I'm repeating.
I've previously peed in a spare nalgene bottle when I hadn't enough water to spare whilst wild camping. Put it at my feet and kept me warm most of the night at below 0 celcius temps.

Another trick I've used more frequently is to rest your feet in cold water (ie a cold stream/river) until your feet are numb from cold, then as you get into a sleeping bag or something that holds heat, you get an almost instant feeling of warmth which lasts hours.

Anyone else tried these? Works for me! Obviously a hot water nalgene bottle is best when available!

71cl6hvztSL._SL1500_.jpg I bought one of these. I'm going to test it out this week end on a camp out.
