You can use almost any water bottle (excepting the really thin disposables) but be sure to test at home both for leakage while in any position and to see if it can withstand very hot water. A rubber hot water bottle would be great for car camping but rather heavy and bulky for backpacking.

Not only do I test my bottle but I carry a zip lock freezer bag and I put it in there just so I have a 2nd layer of defense against water leaks!

Here is a good combo to use. It’s a bottle designed to handle cold conditions and the bottle carrier is fully insulated. Which helps regulate the heat more efficiently. Then I throw it in my drybag that I use for quilts for extra precaution because it’s already there.

This. Never leaks. Reliable always. Will not crack or break. I heat it right on my canister stove, Fancee Feast, or Optimus Nova. Then slip an old wool sock over it. Also allows me to boil any suspicious water after quick filter paper or micron bag,to kill everything, even worm eggs.

Keith Titanium makes a similar single walled water bottle that can be heated directly.

Ditto. That ziplock freezer bag gives some extra peace of mind. Imagine if a spill did happen while sound asleep?

I am astounded that this thread is still going since 2008! And 2007 or 08 is about the time I 1st used this trick to add a little luxury to my close to zero tests, also something that could add a safety boost if for whatever reason the quilts just were not getting it done on some unusual night.

I wonder whatever happened to Preachaman? I remember an epic trip he reported on where every one got soaked, including quilts, when a hurricane made it up to the Ozarks. At least I think that was him. Hope is is OK.

I have heated up water and used a nalogen bottle to add heat. Recently on cold trips I have starting utilizing a pee bottle so I don’t have to get up and freeze at night but have not been able to bring myself to use it for the heat. The thought of a leak just overtakes my mind and who wants to snuggle with a bottle of pee. Hard to get past the thought.
