    sewing machine help

I know you guys sew so I thought I'd run this problem by.

I just Picked up a new to me singer 750. While in the process of threading the bobbin I noticed the needle bottoms out on the turning metal plate below the bobbin. From what Ive been able to google, Ive come to the conclusion that the machine is out of time? Is there a sewing machines for dummies guide out there? can anybody share some knowledge on how to get my machine running right? thanks!

Take it to a dealer. Get it done right at least the first time. There are a whole slew of things that could be wrong. A dealer tune up is well worth the investment.
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.

I agree with Ramblingrev, but try one thing first. I'm not saying that you are as stupid as I was, but I had a similar problem a long time ago. All it was is I had not pushed the needle all the way up when inserting it. The needle threader not hitting the hole should have tipped me off...

Make sure the needle is properly oriented to the holder. The needle eye faces different directions on different machines. A few (very few) Singer older machines used a non standard needle length. I am not familiar with that specific machine.

i believe the needle is in there correctly. i broke the one that was in there and replaced it with another. i followed the included instruction booklet and it went smoothly. this thing seems to only be a hair off.

i called my local shop and its 93 dollars for a "tune up". does this sound reasonable? i might try my hand to see what i can do first. if i cant fix it i guess the tune up will cover it.. thanks for you replys!

no labor price is ever "reasonable" but I suspect that is close to the going rate. If you are really handy with mechanics maybe you could work it out. But requesting a book for "dummies" would not lead me to that conclusion. Here is the problem. That is a cam driven machine with four way needle movement capabilities. In other words the needle moves up and down and side to side. The feed dogs move forward and backwards. All this while the bobbin is revolving in one direction. The cams used to select the specialized stitches affect the way all those movements relate to each other. That is a whole lot of stuff that needs to move precisely with each other. It is a complex mechanical system. It does not appear there is a circuit board in there which would introduce a whole nother layer of potential disaster. I say take to the shop. You wont reconize it when you fire it up after it is fixed.

Seems like you could get a new machine for a few dollars more and not have to worry about repairing. Although, there is something to be said for the old machines, their parts are more metal than plastic.

I still think ill give it a shot. Im a mechanical engineer by profession and I keep my 2 antique daily drivers on the road. that should at least qualify me as "handy".

just looking for some basic machine timing info. if all else fails i have the shop to fall back on...

    thanks all!

In that case, try this site. I ordered a trouble shooting guide from them last year. Lots of diagrams of those wittle bitty pieces. Good luck!
