making an undercover from extra fly?

Well I've got an HH explorer with an upgraded hex fly and the original asym fly as well.
I'm thinking of taking the asym and somehow make it into an undercover effectively turning the hammock into a double layered hammock.
Anybody have any thoughts or maybe even experience with this idea? Think i may have to lay out the hammock on the fly to get the exact shape and then cut/sew the edges maybe with some shock cord in there to keep it snug fit? Help appreciated
Added thought, should i stitch the finished layer to the hammock leaving an opening to add padding etc or should i hang it up like an underquilt? Its a side entry HH.

The fly, being waterproof, would act as a vapor barrier. You may have condensation problems. As long as you take proper precautions, it would make an effective undercover. Just be aware That it won't breath at all.

it never occurred to me that it would need to breath, isn't the bottom of the hammock also non breathable?
I'm thinking that putting the second layer would allow me to put in some ccf or some kind of padding versus the usual UQ but do you think it would need to breath? Maybe with the addition of an absorbent/wicking blanket beneath me in the hammock?

Yes, the hammock material is breathable. Here's an excellent article on vapor barriers.

If you just want an undercover, just get some breathable material - even a cotton sheet works-, make another hammock from it and hang it on the bottom of your hammock (hammock inside hammock). An undercover is the same shape as a hammock anyway. It'll be just like an underquilt and still protect the bottom and provide some warmth. You can put a pad or insulation in between it and your hammock.
