Probably wearing too many clothes would be my guess without any more information. It also helps to eat something right before getting in for the night.
Ya, we need a bit more info. What underquilt and top quilt, what temps are you in?
If you ain't havin' fun, you're doin' it wrong
Jumping jacks and run in place briefly before getting in. It is your body heat that gets trapped in the down.
I sleep in less and add clothing thru the night. Works well....for me.

Throw a warm water bottle in the hammock 15-20 minutes before you climb in...toasty warm insulation right from the get go and your body is not having to work overtime to bring the temp up. Which helps though the corse of the night with those calories in reserve as the temp falls.

and +1 one for what Shug said, just don't get all sweaty....you just want the furnace lit not at full burn.

cool thanks for the advice guys
I could be wrong but it sounds like you are letting yourself get cold BEFORE entering the hammock.
Add another vote for jumping jacks.

I would say that if your starting off Cold then it is a lot more work for your body to stabilize your temp. Not letting your self get cold is important to staying warm.
Wear a warm jacket around camp, throw on a good warm hat, gloves...the whole kit to keep warm and then climb into a warm hammock and enjoy.
