DIY Pod from patrol bags and finally TED sock

Warning: This is not for the UL crowd! This is comfort camping at it's best

I started out wondering what to do with 4 patrol bags that I won. That thread is here http://www.hammockforums.net/forum/s...ad.php?t=63498

I went with the POD idea, but I move about a lot, and didn't want confined like PODs will do, so I went with a big pod and so far it's working out really nice.

Now onto some pictures. I have one done, but still working on the foot area.

I started out with cutting the zippers out of the patrol bags, cut the hoods off and sort of in an obtuse rectangle, shaped them up. Narrow on one end and wider on the other. Please ignore the dog toys and such, it was hard enough to try to keep 10 dogs out of the pictures....and excuse the cell phone camera quality.

I also had few patches to do and seamed up the long sides. I left the ends unseamed at this stage.

Example of a patch/repair. All bags had some minor repairs and they weren't a big deal at all.

Then I roll hemmed 4 ends with shock cord inside (that's 2 bags and 4 ends ). burned holes in the middle for the shock cord to come out of, added cord locks. All four end pieces are adjustable independent from each other. Then I joined the two bags together only on one side and length wise., wider ends matched, and narrow ends matched. Wider end will be shoulder end, narrow end will be foot end.

Nice job Diva! Have you tried it out yet? How cold are you able to go and still be comfortable?
FYI: If you want to know what type a certain bear is, sneak up behind it and kick it. Then,
run like crazy and climb up a tree. If the bear climbs the tree and eats you, it's a black
bear. If the bear just pushes the tree over and eats you, it's a grizzly bear : )

Do not walk behind me, for I may not lead. Do not walk ahead of me, for I may not follow. Do not walk beside me, either, just leave me alone.

Then I added draft tubes with 1.1 ripstop and down. I did 3. One on the lower shoulder end, one on lower foot end, and a larger draft tube on the upper foot end.

Then I add the POD suspension tabs on the 4 lower sections corners. I sewed a grosgrain tab on the four corners, tied shockcord on each corner, and added cord locks and mitten hooks to each piece. Each corner is adjustable by use of the cord locks and combined mitten hooks.

I have a 3/4 length DIY down UQ, supposedly good to 20 degrees or lower, has 2.5" loft and 800 down...but I wanted to make sure and have added insurance to help with my chronic CBS (ignore the blankets and crap in the background, makes it look like their on the hammock, but they are piled on a chair....the entry seems to be a collect all for everyone's stuff)

Opps, forgot, I added Velcro to the open sides, down by the ends. I've not decided yet what I'm going to use to finish that side up. It will probably be Velcro since I have a lot of that.

No, pink and green are not ideal....but it is what it is, I keep trying to convince myself that those colors work for Easter, so why not

Now here it is on the oversized hammock. I am not suspending it from the ends of my hammock. I'm using my ridgeline and added pursiks for added adjustability. I wanted to make sure that my UQ was not compressed and had plenty of room to loft properly. Keep in mind that this POD is fully adjustable in several areas.

I am still working on the top foot piece. I overstuffed that larger draft tube and I think I actually made it so that it doesn't sag enough to fill the air gaps when laying on the diagonal. I may even add a footbox attached to it to help pull it down. Yes you can lay diagonal in this.

I just got this sort-of done last night, so it's not been field tested, and I can't lay in it too long inside the house as it gets uncomfortably hot. I still need to seal the top portion of the foot end better and finish the one side that still needs shut with Velcro or snaps or whatever.

When my son gets moving, I'll take a picture of someone in it. My husband refuses to hang off the door hinges.
