Rectangular designs are common, mainly because they are easier for a DIYer to understand and construct. My calculator, for example, would be a LOT more complicated if it allowed for variable end widths - suddenly you're calculating a series of curves instead of straight material.
The tapered-end design is 100% doable and has been done many times before, through various means (darts, etc.), so if you're looking to cut a little weight, give it a try!
