Cross-ways Baffles?

One last question (for now, I promise!); All the underquilt designs I've seen are rectangular when laid out. With all the gram weenies around here in DIY, it seemed strange that the ends weren't frequently tapered to eliminate all that bunched up fabric/down. The quilt isn't load bearing, so there is no need to keep a continuous material cross section out there, right? A coffin-shaped (I hate coffin-hammock analogies...) flat pattern would seem to provide the most efficient use of material, like they do for top quilts--anybody done that on an UQ?

Rectangular designs are common, mainly because they are easier for a DIYer to understand and construct. My calculator, for example, would be a LOT more complicated if it allowed for variable end widths - suddenly you're calculating a series of curves instead of straight material.

The tapered-end design is 100% doable and has been done many times before, through various means (darts, etc.), so if you're looking to cut a little weight, give it a try!

Montbell uses diagonal baffles on their bags. I think it's baffled on the bias to give the bags more stretch and therefore comfort.

More like I'm looking to cut a little down ($) ! I'll need to build a top quilt concurrently with this thing, after all. I'm gonna be flat broke if I don't trim everywhere I can. I'm glad to hear others have met with success, perhaps I will too.
