    Intregrated Gear Loft

Here is an idea that I plan to try in the next day or so, but it might save me some time and agony if anyone has already tried this (and failed).

Being in South Florida, the need for as much bug protection as possible is paramount in some places. So I was thinking that I would like to have as much gear inside the safety of the bug net as possible.

My plan is to take an extra long piece of material and create an integrated gear loft as a "mini hammock" that is connected to the foot end of the main hammock.

Think of it this way. If you folded over a 4' section of material as if you were making a rediculously wide hem. Gather that seam as the common end of both the main and gear hammock. Gather the other two ends seperately. Then attach each independent end to seperate ridgelines.

Anyone try this already or see any issues with the plan?

I'll toss out a couple of ideas..
Attach the gear loft to the hammock ridgeline with prussics. It'll allow you to adjust the sag on the gear loft. You can prototype the size of your gear loft with clothespins on the ridgeline. Find a suitable size (I'd guess 4 foot or smaller would do the trick, too big or long would get in the way), sew it up and suspend it. One thing to keep in mind is that heavier items can fall out and hit you. Its amazing how much a flashlight or leathermen can hurt when it hits you in the face.... Typically, gravity keeps things in the bottom, but when pulling out a extra coat at night, something may follow it out.

Peak bags are made and sold by 2QZQ. Its a custom stuff sacks that hangs up at the head or foot end for stowing gear. They also offer a ridgeline organizer made of mesh.
Both great items for stashing gear. And a easy diy item you could try.

Some folks use a independent bug net/sock. You can toss light items in the area below the hammock. Keeps stuff off the ground and within easy reach while in the hammock.

The multi bush chair, gear hammock, hammock chair, pack cover would be better use of material. I'll have to search for those links later, I have an appointment I've got to get to....unless someone beats me to it (I hope )

    Good point. I hate uni-taskers

DivaB, Great point! In my line of thought in the integration, I forgot the downside to having it committed to that location.

I think I will make something separate and just leave it attached until I want to use it elsewhere.

I'll look for the other links, but if you can post the ones you are thinking of, I would appreciate it.

I believe DivaB is referring to SteelerNation's Camp Seat/Gear hammock/Pack Cover DIY.

    Changing my plan then

Thank you for pointing out the multipurpose chair/pack cover thread. I will now make it separate and from different material. Maybe I'll use the additional material for a footbox instead.

Why not have the gear hammock hang below your normal hammock?

If you use a big enough bug net (Or DIY the 'TED' design i believe it is?) everything would be covered. Would leave the view above uninterrupted too..

Some people do that too. And some have their gear hammock set beside their hammock so that they can easily see in it while reaching for items.
