    Newbie from NC

    Howdy from North Carolina!

My name is Griff and I just joined the forum this morning. I'm an avid AT section hiker and I'm looking for ways to improve the experience. There has to be something better than laying on roots and rocks!

I've never actually tried sleeping in a hammock before and I haven't made a choice as to make or model yet. I'm here as a complete newbie looking for some guidance. What works for you folks?

    Thanks for any input

welcome to the madness from down on the coast

Attend a group hang so you can check out the different setups. If you ask real nice most of us will let you get in our hammocks to check them out.

Welcome aboard. Lots of great hammock options out there and you've found the best place in the world to learn about them.

For sure, you're in a great area for hiking.

By springtime at least, maybe sooner, there should be some group hangs within driving distance where you can see what's up hammock-wise. Check the calendar here on HF.

Since you seem to be asking for some direction, just remember that most folks relate what is good for them, and there are a lot of options out there, so you will get a lot of different suggestions. That said, and I don't own one, nor stock in the company, but BIAS hammocks are to me a great place to start. Butt In A Sling, BIAS, has some great stuff that won't break the bank, and if it suits you, is good for the long haul. The best thing about using cottage industry folks found here on HF, is that you WON'T get stung. Happy hanging on your trips, and welcome from north Georgia.

Welcome from the Greenville area of SC. Glad to have you on the board. I recommend watching the Shug Introduction videos and see what all might be available.
I'm a bit of a gram weenie so I like things light and simple, and usually homemade so I can keep it that way. Perhaps try attending a group hang in your area, tents and tarps are allowed for newbies to see what might fit your bill. Also, we can help answer more specific questions you might have.

Welcome! +1 on watching Shug's videos to start off. Then get out to a group hang - you'll get to see tons of gear in the wild and talk to knowlegeable folks about what works well before you make an investment. If you want to get in with minimal investment check out the DIY instructions at DIY Gear Suppy. May son was able to make a complete setup for about $120 in materials and some time.
    see you on the trail,
    Mike

    Welcome aboard!

I went to my first group hang with a tent just to check things out before I bought. It worked out well for me. Lots of good choices out there.
