    Half Doors?

    Hello everyone.

I’m currently in the process of making a tarp with 4 doors. My primary objective for including doors is to stop the occasional windblown rain as opposed to stopping cold air. To save a little weight, I am contemplating making the beaks half height (i.e. when fully closed, the doors would only cover the top 30 inches or so, leaving the bottom open). The idea is that my hammock is 15-20 inches or so off the ground therefore any horizontally blow rain at the ground level is less likely to soak anything critical. Has anyone else tried this? I’m curious to get feedback before I waste material. Thanks.

    Brian

I like the idea. I was going to add door flaps to my WL Big Daddy, but really don't want the extra size. That may be a good option. I can always add the bottom halves if it doesn't work out.

Thanks. For clarity, I’m thinking of removing the dashed area in the following diagram and making the tarp sized to the solid red line only. Ignore the blue lines – the blue lines are the dimensions of one of my fixed beak ground tarps for size comparison.

    Little doors

I was also trying to extend the coverage of a tarp, and came up with a solution like you are talking about.

I made some "half doors" on a tarp that was being modified from a SpinnTwinn into a hammock tarp. The inside edges of the doors are lined with velcro to make the closure.

I never tested the configuration in heavy rain though. And I have now moved to a HG cuban Hex tarp that gives better coverage at less weight. Best wishes with your half door design.
