Need Advice from the DIY Experts

Here is my Idea and I am looking for any and all Input

New Top Entry Bug Net / Bivy Combo
( just in case I need to go on the Ground)

This design is based on the designs by other forum members and all of the additions to the original posts under Top Entry Detatched Bug Net

I have made a TED with just Organza and it works Great, BUT
I think this idea would add some wind/Rain protection and possibly some insulation value and also has a Built IN JUST IN CASE Bivy with Net
( I hope to never have to use it)

I made a Mock UP and the Dimensions came out real close based on my
    scale Model (scale : 1"= 1')

Please add your thoughts and suggestions

    Thanks in Advance

Sounds interesting. Just be sure to give the bottom enough room as that it's not hugging your UQ when hanging and you should be fine, otherwise it may act as a vapor barrier and soak your UQ.

I like this - it's very neat. This would be great for warmer weather - it would be nice and breezy. Have you thought of making the tarp bigger? You could have it overlap for better rain coverage and with short lengths of cord, tie the sides down.

I'm thinking about it as a purely go to ground dwelling bivy - not as an accessory for the hammock. You could make the bottom out of waterproof material in a bath tub style with a couple feet (height wise) of bug net around and covered with an over lapping tarp that can be hung from a ridge line or poles.. Bet it would be very light weight.

You can make it like the Ted Bug Net and have shock cord on one top side of the bug net for easy entry and exit. The tarp could be sewn to the other side of the bug netting and a couple feet of tarp to stake out on each side. It would be bug proof, be breezy and you would be out of the rain.

I think it would be very easy to make also. Would you mind if I try your idea, scottpash?

I can make a mini mock-up and post the pictures/video on how I visualize it. I'm not very good at explaining descriptions - sorry.
I got in a fight one time with a really big guy, and he said, "I'm going to mop the floor with your face." I said, "You'll be sorry." He said, "Oh, yeah? Why?" I said, "Well, you won't be able to get into the corners very well."

I made a mini mock-up of scottpash's idea. Please excuse the crudeness of the thing (unnamed). I believe you'll get the idea. The open side would have shock cord along the top for entry/exit like the Ted bug net and of course you'll have to visualize the sides/tarp being staked out. This is like a bugnet tent shelter all in one!

Looks great! This reminded me of a bivy design I put together in July. I hope you don't mind if I post it here if it gives you some additional ideas. I wanted to create another minimalist design that takes advantage of high-end breathable/waterproof fabrics and a minimal tarp.

Awesome mock-up Lost_Biker! Seems like a real interesting idea. Thankfully I haven't hit an area where I needed to go to ground (I tend to keep walking - wonder how long that streak will last!) but its always something in the back of my mind.

Thanks!! You guys can draw plans a lot better than I can make a mock-up. I don't mind - maybe all this will give scottpash some ideas. I hope he chimes in soon so we can explore this a bit more. I didn't mean to hijack his post.

Thanks dragon. Ya never know till you hit the ground. I still like my hammock. This is just a side project just to see what works and what doesn't work. I tend to let things rattle around in my mind way too long. I'm afraid that this has struck my fancy for some reason.

Looking at available materials, I believe this would run about 13 to 14oz in weight, maybe less with the new high tech stuff.

Great Mock Up mine was alittle more crude so no pictures

The Top cap would be just like the TED bugnet just to close off the top where the two sides have shockcord

My Tarp is actually a 12 x 12 Guide Gear (cheap and a little heavy but after the mods and seam sealing it it works great)
so I will have full coverage and going to the ground is a last resort

I thought if I used tyvek or DWR it could actually help with insulation
I am a very warm sleeper and can go pretty low with just my sleeping bag and no UQ

    35-40 degrees was no problem
but we all know an UQ makes a more comfortable sleep !!!!!!!!!

    great ideas and thanks
I will post pics after I make it
