    Down Sleeves

1 oz of down + <0.5 ounces of fabric + some cord to hold them together, and you too can have your own down sleeves!

That's ~1.5 oz each. A pair will run you a shade less than 4 ounces depending on your shell material and how warm you want to be.

Thank you to AngrySparrow for hosting this pdf file and saving me the pain of typing it all up, again.

I strongly advise that you make a practice sleeve with cheapo fabric before doing this with the "good" stuff. After a lot of practice making a few prototypes, I was able to knock out this pair in a day (and that includes all the photo ops). This project is not for the faint of heart, but for experienced sewers it's not difficult. It just takes time to weigh the down packets and stuff each through a pencil sized hole.

If you use this pattern, then all I ask is that you make a contribution to hammockforums.net, or to the appalachiantrail.org in memory of Pat Peoples.

    Enjoy!

ps: these two sleeves can compress to about the size of one soda can.

    Thanks for the post TW.

I have been looking for a decent tutorial for down sleeves so I might just give this one a try this weekend....but not in purple...(yikes) LOL

I will make a donation...both very worthy causes.

Excellent tutorial, TW. I'll probably have to make a pair of these at some time in the near future.

    Hi,
I think you did a really great job with your "Down Sleeves". I really like Down and I don't much worry about getting my Down stuff wet. I just work a lot faster using a syntetic insulation.

I have a couple of pounds of Down some of which is going into a very light sleeping bag one day.
