Is a sil tarp worth it?

I have the chance to get a ENO profly sil nylon for a very cheap price. I know sil in light, but What else is good about it? Does any one have expirience with this tarp? Are there down sides to sil (I will use it as a three season tarp)

The only 2 downsides that I can think of are
1: it does stretch when it gets wet, so you need shock cord tensioners with your guylines to keep it tight.
2: It's heavy, when compared to cuben.

Compared to most anything else, it's liteweight. I don't have the tarp that you are talking about, but I do have a sil tarp, and will probably have another, when the extra funds are available.

You don't have to have tensioners to keep a tight pitch on a sil tarp. If (big if) you have good soil that will hold a stake properly, you can stretch the tarp a good deal during setup (stretching the fabric) and it will still be taut in the morning. You just have to stretch the fabric more than it will loosen during the night. I've waken up plenty of times with a wet sil tarp that wasn't sagging a bit.

I have the Profly, it keeps me dry in large storms on the Oregon Coast, hammock sways, dips and goes forward and back as the trees sway. I have not gotten wet, I like that it does not make me feel so enclosed. I have used it with two different Hennessey's and my daughter used it on her ENO Dbl. I think it is heavy, but it works well for me.

Sil is great stuff--------its not quite as abrasion resistant as ripstop, but its very affordable, and will last you many years if you take care of it! Think of it as a nice compromise between ripstop and cuban!

run like crazy and climb up a tree. If the bear climbs the tree and eats you, it's a black

    DJ,

"Is sil worth it?" what are you comparing it to?

    Tyvek? Maybe

    Cheap poly tarps? Yes

    Heavy canvas tarps? Yes

    Poly coated tarps? Maybe

Cuben fiber? Not a fair comparison.

What are your planned use conditions, front country or back country?

If you provide more detailed information about your question, this forum will flood you with useful opinions and thoughts.

    Good luck in your quest.

If you plan on just doing your backyard hangs than weight isn't really an issue for you. But, if you like to hike and put in some miles, sil will be really nice when you're carrying it on your back.

ENO Profly (126"x76") is a bit small for my preference but like Fronkey said ... you're back will thank you for the weight savings vs a coated tarp if you're backpacking. I think Sil is definitely worth the up charge if it works with your budget.
