Trying to find an affordable down tq

ok I know when tax time comes I will be buying a wbbb and a down uq and a superfly but i need a good top quilt so let me know what you guys think i should do on that front

You might try attending a group hang to check out what others are using and why

Need to know...

What is the lowest temp you plan to use the UQ

Are you looking for a Full Length or 3/4 length

car camper ...weight is not an issue
backpacker ...weight is an issue

Budget...how much to you plan to spend

Do you want new or used

For what temperature range do you seek for your quilts? The reality is that you can't go wrong getting one from any of the vendors on this site. Just start saving your pennies now. Also note that usually ordering everything for a single vendor will save on shipping costs and sometimes you can work out a package deal too.

You could invest some of your time in researching how to adapt a sleeping bag into a TQ. You could post a want to buy ad here and daily watch the for sale ads here and at BackpackingLIght for a used TQ.

You could simply sew some fabric into long chambers with sewn through seams, then add down from thru-hiker.com to make a 2 season (low temp near 40 degrees) TQ like a Tewa Breeze.

You could buy some light nylon fabric and some Climashield insulation from thru-hiker.com or Quest Outfitters, then sew those materials into flat quilt. Yes, the seams will not look professionally sewn, but so what.

See posts 34 and especially #35. CS is Climashield and it comes in different thicknesses that have a specific weight per square yard. Apex CS is extra warm and slightly more expensive. Enlightened Equipment is a cottage manufacturer who makes CS quilts and down quilts, Tim (the owner) is also a hammock hanger.

Not that I have any experience working with down, but from what I've read DIY appears to be more affordable that outright purchasing. Of course, there is the quality and craftsmanship to consider. If you have any skill at sewing, you might look at making your own.

Bought a Down mummy bag on ebay... pulled the zipper, draft tube, and cut off the hood...

It works for me, and cost a mere $45. Of course, if I charged myself $10/hr it would have been cheaper to buy one!

What about the fact that the bottom half of a mummy bag has far less down than the top half, so one side of your TQ keeps you warm while the other half doesn't?

Just wondering what folks do about that issue.
