    Noob UQ Question

I am waiting for the Zeppelin 20 UQ that I ordered. I am a complete beginner at hammocks, but have watched many, many videos with green envy for over a year until taking the plunge. My question is this: with that UQ, should I still use a SOL heat sheet in between the layers of my BB 1.1 double? Logic tells me it would help in blocking the wind, but I don't want to block the insulating properties of the UQ.

You thoughts? Comments? All are appreciated!

You shouldn't need it unless you go down to colder temps....and if you're prone to CBS (cold butt syndrome) then folding it up for that area can be helpful, but make sure you've checked your UQ first to make sure there are no air gaps. To help with the wind, a sock will do the trick, even an undercover will help.

I got the UQ with the baffles on each end, so air getting in should not be a problem. I do get CBS, so I will try your tip of just 'localized protection'

you can get gaps along the side as well, it's always a good idea to have somebody check for gaps after you lay in it the first few times until you get it dialed in

Should not need it unless you get down into the below 0* C temps and then I would just consider another UQ capable of the lower temps.
When asked why I sleep with my shoes on? I don't need to out run a bear, just need to out run my camp mates.

As Boothill said, one of the factors is breathability. If you have an UQ, it will have the ability to dissipate moisture to a certain extent. If you put down the heatsheat, you'll lock in the moisture. One of the problems that I had with a wallyworld blue mat ($10) was getting a sweaty back. With UQ's I don't have that problem, unless the heat is intense (like using a UQ with a 0* rating in 75* weather, without venting).

I got a UQProtector from 2QZQ for $35 & it added about 5* to 10* warmth, as it fits loosely around the OUTSIDE of the UQ, without compressing the UQ. It helps keep the heat in by stopping a lot of the wind from carrying away the heat of the UQ; while still allowing vapor to travel off your body.

When you get wet (even from sweat) and it's cold out, you'll often get colder.

I got my UQ the day after my first hang with the new hammock. It is amazing and I think will do the job all by itself! Can't wait to try it out!

it is very helpful to have someone help you out visually to dial it in.

I, too, got the UQProtector from 2QZQ for $35 for extra windy or rainy conditions.
