    Length of Adjustable Ridgeline

Sorry if this is an old question. I'm going to make a whoopie sling for my ridgeline but I'm not sure how much adjustability I need. I saw that the adjustable ridgeline on whoopieslings.com is 82" - 116" and I know most people recommend starting at 100" when determining a comfortable length.
The hammock mine would be used on is the Grand Trunk UL. I want to avoid making a ridgeline and then discovering that is too short or too long for my needs.
Is 80"-120" a good amount for the GTUL?
Again I apologize if this has been answered before.

I think the rule of thumb is 80-83% of the length of your hammock and then tweak it from there. The body of a GTUL is supposed to be 9.5' but you may want to measure yours to be sure. That would put you at 92" - 95".

Thanks, that answered my question. I actually don't have a GTUL yet (I'm acquiring my gear out of order) so I can't measure, but now I have an estimate go from.

You can't go by manufacturer's specs. Here's part of my response to another thread on the same question...

"So.....my assumption is that you got the hammock length from GT's "specs". That's your mistake. That measurement is usually given for the raw material before hemming, etc.

My GT UL measures ~105" so 83% of that is 87" and probably closer to what your ridgeline should be."

I'd make the range of an adjustable SRL for a GTUL ~77"-97".

I just made an adjustable ridgline for someone's gt ul, he wanted the middle point at 108", and I gave about 6-8" of play on either side, so about 100"-116" to keep the excess cord down and keep the bury at your feet instead of in the middle.

With an advertised length of 114" and a real length of ~105", he must really like it stretched out flat...while using the ridgeline as a "seatbelt".

I had to go back and look at that. It was not for a gt ul. Got two people confused. Ha.

Okay I finished mine. Since I don't have the hammock yet I decided to give myself a large range of adjustability. I can go from around 75" to 115". Its probably more room than I need but I'd rather be on the safe side than have it not work.

What I have found to work best is measure your hammock laid flat, find what number is 83% of that then add a few inches in each direction (usually 5" or so) for adjust-ability. This is just what has worked for me and may be different for others. In all honesty if you were to make it adjustable by 10" you should be able to find your sweet spot. Then when you find your sweet spot just mark it measure it and then make a fixed ridgeline off that number.

I almost suggested this. I did the same thing so I could use it on any hammock. I use it on new hammocks to find the length I like and then make a fixed ridgeline.
