I think the Thru hiker Whitney jacket comes with 5.2oz of down for a medium size.

My knife is so sharp it cut the sixth finger off my right hand! On the plus side, Inigo Montoya no longer hunts me.

The thru-hiker Whitney in size medium comes with 5.2 oz of down. I made mine a good bit longer in the torso and lengthened the sleeves a bit and ended up using 5.8oz of down (the additional down was from the group buy). It is a toasty warm jacket, but since you just started sewing, I would recommend to make the quilts first before trying to sew the jacket. And then, maybe practice on some other clothing items first.

The top quilt I was using at the Congaree swamp hangout had about 7.5oz of Speer down in it, IIRC. I've found it comfortable to the mid-twenties. As an underquilt, I don't think I could go much below 40 with it, unless I double it over and use as a 1/2 UQ. 12 oz of down for a full-length UQ will probably do you just fine for 3-season South Carolina backpacking, and by that I mean Fall, Winter and Spring!

Will you be attending the NC Hot Springs Hang out?

I'd like to go, but will most likely be in Europe at that time. We should really plan another swamp hang!

    Hey Ed-

Want to give us a total for the down group buy? I'd like to know how many bags next year's crop is going to have to buy to beat us.
    Trust nobody!

I'm not sure Cannibal, but I think it was nearly 100 bags = 310 oz of the finest goose down available on the planet! That should be enought to keep even me warm! We're looking forward to hearing about all the DIY projects.
