One thing that seems off to me about pitching the 12 in a diamond configuration is if my math is right it would almost be 17ft across, right? Doesn't that make hanging your hammock a bit interesting since ideally you would want 12 to 15ft between your anchor points?

I probably should have mentioned earlier that I do most of my camping during the fair weather months and backpack so that is why the 9 works for me. You probably wouldn't want to use it in adverse weather like snow or high winds/rain

    Edit:

Sorry, I guess this answers my question.

I only have the 12. After reading this thread, I might consider getting a 9 for warm weather. But it sure is nice taking a hike in hot weather and coming back to camp and laying in my snipe with the 12 in porch mode. Keeps the sun off you but lets any breeze in. Nap time.....Plus the 12 lets you easily cover up other stuff besides your hammock, ie. your pack, camp kitchen, etc.

BTW, has anyone ever sprayed their Kelty tarp down with anything (Nikwax, etc) to keep it waterproof? If so,what has worked for you?

I'm still torn between the 9 and 12
the 12 would be nice in foul weather winter

    maybe I should get both
the 12 seems hard to find
    always sold out it seems
    such pleasant worries

I have a kelty 9, it was my first real hammock tarp. The first time I used a hammock, I just had a cheap wallyworld tarp. But after that, it was the Kelty. Still have it,'but haven't used it in a while, as I know have a WL Tadpole.

As for the waterproofness, I haven't had to put anything on the tarp. Works great as is.
