Down Sleeves

I have been admiring the JRB down sleeves and now the DIY ones. I got to thinking about picking up a down coat at Goodwill and cutting off the sleeves after running a couple of seams around the shoulder and to the underarm area. Then cutting between the seams and hemming. With cords attached why wouldn't this work? I stopped at a Goodwill and found an EMS jacket with puffy sleeves that fit my arms well. I thought I could use the sleeves and maybe salvage the down out of the body. I have $10.50 in it so far. Any suggestions?

Sounds like it might work. It might not be quite as light as the JRB version, or maybe it will.

You're right, it won't be as light with fabric that is definitely heavier than the ripstop JRB uses. I have been spending too much lately and don't think I can get by with buying JRB sleeves. I might just make my own and recycle the down. I don't know EMS (Eastern Mountain Supply) as a brand but it seems to be well made. The labels don't state what grade of down, just says "white down". The coat is also a small size and I am err....a little larger!
