Please be sure your wood isn't from a quarantine area. The Smokeys already have critters going after ash, hemlocks and others. I cannot bring any from Knoxville as we are quarantined.
The tricky part with that firepit is the moisture. If you don't build a platform first, the moisture will keep putting your fire out all day.
I agree no bug wood! I have some sweet fire starters too! Our last trip up there was very wet ! My screen name should be the Fire whisperer!

If there is enough snow a cheap sled from Walmart would work and you could hike the road up and cut over to the side trail! I'm pondering this move myself! Plus sleigh riding down the road would be insane!

From past personal experience, you do NOT want to try to keep a pulk sled balanced behind you on the AT. Gravity and off camber trails do not agree with sleds. Dragging a tarp for a couple of hundred feet might work, but pulling a pulk for a couple of miles is a whole different ball game.
I'm also thinking that one of the cheap 8X6 silver tarps would make a good windbreak for the firepit. The wind always comes in from the NW right in front of the shelter and over the firepit in th evenings.
