A shorter route with the possible use of snowshoes can overcome that. Odds are pretty slim that the snow depth will build that much in the next two weeks. An 18 inch post hole is manageable. It's the darned 48 inch ones that start slowing you down.

You can type in any mtn range !
Also Jason Walmart sells this cheap backpacking tarp with grommet holes in it and if you rig it up like an UQ it would work great as a vapor barrier? I've been thinking about taking one along with some Reflectives just in case I get chilly! My gear and the other fellas coming in my group , their gear is rated to 20* also! I add my down coat heavy thermals and down booties to the mix ! I've made it to 9* last year with a 55 mph wind !
Using 3-season gear will require some adaptation to try Roan in January. Most will take gear that is good to at least 10 degrees below the forecasted low. This would be especially the case if you've been beaten up all day which causes one to sleep colder than usual.

Below that, you might need more. A coat and layers on your legs will extend the TQ without much issue.

All sorts of ways to handle cold. You just have to look in your gearbox to see what tools you have to work with.
Thanks for the info have a superfly tarp and a blackbird hammock. Some other bags heavy but warm and lots of warm clothes.

I am still thinking about giving it a go. Let me know f any one goes I may be up to giving it a try. If I get to cold I can always head for the truck. Have 4x4 and have driven up there in some pretty crazy snow and weather before. Did stay in the shelter cabin one night snow and in the teens been a while back though.

That gear along with a pad of some sort combined with a good insulating jacket could get you around 0 without carrying a Frankenpack of accessories.

I might be in. Have to look at the schedule. Remember to seal everything in mouse proof containers at that shelter. :-)

No doubt. Those mice hit that trailmix in less than two minutes.

I probably wouldnt bet on the walls or posts being able to stand that. Besides, the shelter won't be any warmer than it is outside and certainly will have more mice.
