Absolute minimum distance between anchor points

So I went to HomeDepot and bought some serious-looking bolts (the ones for swings), and am trying to muster the cajones to actually try it. I'm only like 150lbs, so I'm not terribly concerned, but concern is there. Especially when the in-laws (who don't need any more convincing of my craziness ("you're planning on camping during deep winter in CO? In a hammock? ...")) are about to be in town.

I have a stud finder and bolts in hand, but I don't know where to sink them.

I want the most flexibility. I have a WBBB and will someday have a WBRR and would like to be able to hang them both from the same anchors. If impossible, I suppose I could always grab another set of the bolts and put them in the same studs at different heights, but meh... more holes to fill later on.

So, what's the absolute minimum distance between anchors for the WBRR? I assume from the tip of one triangle to the tip of another? Anyone know that distance?

    Any other advice?

    Thanks, y'all!

Also, is it okay to hang it like so?

Or do the suspension lines need to be coming off parallel to the bolt?

depends on strength of bolt. minimum distance is the length of ridge-line (or imaginary ridge-line)

I know that's the rule of thumb for gathered ends, but it's different for bridges, no? I need to be able to accommodate the triangles.

And I just went to get a link for the hooks to ask if anyone would trust them at an angle, but they're only a 150lb safe working load. Guess it's back to find something else. >.<

If I were to consider what you illustrated, I would have at least 2 concerns. One is the strength of the stud wall. Will you potentially move it enough to crack the dry wall or worse tear the stud out. Second, I have concern about the angle of the pull on the eye bolt. Will the eye bolt bend, will it twist the stud?

I don't pretend to be expert about such things, but a tremendous amount of torque can be applied with those angles and hanging. If you knew the wall was solid as can be, and the eye bolt would never bend or pull free, you would be good to go. You might consider a cleat on the wall and bolt into two to three studs to distribute the load more.

Just remember, never hang higher than you are willing to fall.

Hanging at an angle like that you are not only putting a large outward force on those studs you are also twisting them. If I were you I would screw a 2x4 to the wall spanning a couple studs. By spanning more than one stud you are effectively cutting the force on each stud. Do this and it will hold up just fine. As for your distance I can not help there but I am sure someone has theirs set up in the basement and measuring it as we type.

I have hammocks setup in a couple of rooms in my house. The minimal distance I like to go with on my 11' gathered end hammocks is 12'. In my living room the distance is 15' and that is the minimal I am comfortable with the WBRR.
The height of my I-bolts is 5' 8"

i put eye screws in the 6x6 poles in my cabin, but if i were you with 2x4 walls i would make a triangle with 2x6s taking in at least 3 studs.my eye bolts are quarter inch.also screw them in not nailed (boards that is).if you dont think that will be strong enough run four 2 x4 horizontal on the wall taking in 4 or 5 studs before screwing on the trangles. screw lag bolt eyes through the 2x6 and the 2x4 then into the stud.good luck youll like an inside hammock.gmcttr and space w are right on the 15 feet.if you shorten the triangles put some padding on the floor it will dump you there.
