I have never camped in the Desert so I can not testify to that option. But if there is will there is a way.

Welcome from Denver. Works great on bike packing. Desert is a little tougher. Just have to look for riparian areas that'll have at least some trees.

Welcome from south Texas... There are a few portable stands available that are hikable so those may be something your interested in... But other than that, most people tend to hike near trees so its a non issue...

As for your question on desert camping: having spent a lot of time in West Texas, finding good hanging spots in the desert can be a challenge. To find decent trees, you generally need to go near streams, where tamarisk and cottonwoods grow, or go higher into the juniper/oak/pine zone.

I've done cycling 3 trips across the USA with a hammock - out in the desert regions you have to improvise - fence poles and the like. I had a heck of a time going thru Wyoming and parts of Colorado. Sometimes the hammock went on the ground, the ends held up by 2 sticks. Not as uncomfortable as you would think.
I got in a fight one time with a really big guy, and he said, "I'm going to mop the floor with your face." I said, "You'll be sorry." He said, "Oh, yeah? Why?" I said, "Well, you won't be able to get into the corners very well."
