Not a problem as gators are bottom feeders....they start at the bottom of the hammock and work their way up

I've never had a problem with alligators. Sometimes their curiosity is unnerving; they will swim parallel to a canoe sometimes.
gunner76,
Are there many gators around Beaufort? Camp LeJeune and Wilmington had pretty back in the 1980's, but I never saw any around Cherry Point.

Under most circumstances gators won't bother you. Just follow some of the cautions mentioned above. The dangerous ones are those that have been fed by people and expect food when a human approaches.
A crackhead decided to go skinny dipping in Lake Parker here in Lakeland a few years back. Of course it was dark, law enforcement managed to get him away from the gator and it cost the gator his life. Not sure what happened to the crackhead but he should have at least been fined for feeding wildlife.
Most of us end up poorer here but richer for being here. Olddog, Fulltime hammocker, 365 nights a year.
Yes, there are gators here. I have yet to see one and I have lived here 20 years and I would love to see one here in the wild here. I have talked to boaters and fishermen who said they see them all the time.gunner76,

Last year one was spotted swimming in the boating channel next to Radio Island and Beaufort. Passed up a bunch of tasty swimmers as it swam by.
This year one was found at a Nursery on Hwy 24 and one spent some time over at Emerald Island.
I have a friend at Emerald Island who asked the police to check her property becuase of someone shooting a gun. The police did not find a shooter but asked her if she knew that she had an alligator in her backyard. Now when I see her I ask how Ally is doing.
Alligators can be found as far noth as Merchants Mill Pond State Park in NC. I think they have about 3 living there.

Threads like this are why I love Colorado. No poisonous snakes up in the mountains. Fewer bugs, etc. etc.

A long time ago in the Okefenokee, one followed our canoe then took the stringer of fish we had caught.

Don't bet on that! Since 1992, I've seen two Prairie Rattlers in the mountains.
One CT thru-hiker I shuttled said he saw a Diamondback on his way down into Durango.
We have 4 different species of rattlesnakes in Colorado. I have seen all but the Massasauga in the wild here. They might be rare to see in the mountains, but a few of them creep up there.
Trust nobody!
