The woods are a dangerous place in high winds, and I won't go, if there's a choice. I'm not afraid of pain, or dying, but convalescing sucks, so I try to avoid high risk situations and behaviors.

Having said that, when things kick up, a low, tight pitch anchored with Al gutter spikes is my choice. I also believe strongly in a substantial ridgeline on my tarp. It will stop some of the falling branches some of the time.

I was in 50mph at ~30*F with my SF and the biggest problem I had was keeping the stakes (groundhogs) in the ground. We had had a freak 70* day 2 days earlier which melted all the snow and left the ground soft so I had to put rocks on top of them. I was so impressed with the SF I sent Brandon a gushing email.

Yeah Zing it or dynema would be able to resist the winds your talking about maybe install tensioners to.

I have never suffered any gale force winds like you have I hang around trees where they eliminate the majority of the wind. I also have mountains by me and that tends to stop any wind in it's tracks.

Same here whenever possible. I've even been known to take some extra long guy line extenders to improve my odds of being able to do that. Another thing is, at least if I am not out with tenting friends, I love to find a nice spot with lots of just big enough trees on the lee side of a nice steep hill. That seems to help a lot.

Gutter Spikes are what saved me on Roan Mt a couple years ago when my Ti stakes pulled out in gale force winds.

I've never had a line break as long as I've been using Zing-It.

I carry 4 REI Y stakes and 4 Gutter spikes exclusively now in my pack. I've never had trouble keeping my tarp staked down unless the ground was so saturated and soft that nothing would hold tight. Then I just start stacking rocks on my stakes to keep them in place.

You all know my answer to high wind

no staking down anything. tarp wrapped around the hammock sock and clipped to itself. Submarining through the wind.
In the lesser wind ...say 15-20mp... I'm staking the tarp portion kinda behind the sock pulling the tarp portion firmly against the sock but never tensioned so that the stake could even think about becoming a flying piercing object if dislodged from its earthly bounds.

Probably the wisest info you will get on here. Pay attention everyone. And i agree, a darn good tarp ridgeline is a life saver in high winds.

I've hung comfortably in 60 mph gusts with 45 mph sustained winds. My tie-outs were just plain paracord, but I had shock cord tensioners on each one.

Despite having the tarp tied as close to the ground as possible, the wind still rocked me gently to sleep in a WBBB hammock. It was quite pleasant.
