whoopies as tarp tie outs?

This has been considered by many. The con of using a sling versus a prusik, is it limits your options. The buries make pitching the tarp close to the ground finnicky. Also, stringing the tarp in porch mode is nice, but takes a good amount of cord, which would be doubled using a sling. Means more bulk, more untangling, all when a single piece of cord and a simple hitch accomplishes the same thing.

I've heard the same - the downsides being the minimum distance allowed is greater than with something like prusiks. Another is that whoopies are a bit harder to fiddle/adjust the length when they're under a bit of tension from the tarp. Still doable, but I find prusiks to be easier.

Whoopies are next to impossible to release when they are tensioned. The other day I pulled my slings on my hammock tight to get it up out of the way. I thought I was going to have to cut one to get it back down.

I use mini Whoopies to attach to the tarp. Then I attach another rope to tie to the ground.
It works great and I don't have any problem with adjustments. Good Luck.

Yes, forgot to mention that too, you can't adjust them under tension. Thanks for remembering.

IMO, it's harder to get a tight tarp if using whoopies. I have a Kelty 9, that I hang in a diamond, and have used mason line whoopies, but just as extras to close the tarp in bad weather. I use "Shane's Method", again, IMO, it is the best way to guy out a tarp. But HYOT......RR

Whoopie tarp tie-outs suck man. ABORT that idea. Whoopies are not for tensioning. Take that zing it and use it like Warbonnet's Brandon does. Look up his stake knot on his Superfly how to video on Youtube. I've been doing it for 4 years and it's still the best method to date.

I'm using the mini line loks, and they are nice, but I found they can slip under windy conditions.....of course, that's nothing a quick half hitch can't fix.

A whoopie is just like a Chinese finger trap when it's under real tension. Remember what a pain it was to get that thing off when you tugged and pulled as a kid.

This was one of my first mistakes - trying to apply whoopies not just to suspension but to my tarp ridgeline, tie-outs, etc. One camping trip was all I needed to dump that idea - must have spent an hour trying to get my tarp taut, to no avail.

As has been practical, I've been replacing prusiks with UCR's. By the time I get a prusik to grab as well as I'd like then it never lets go. I don't have that problem with UCR's. If you ever run into the scenario where the bury of the UCR won't let you get as close to the ground as you'd like just go around the stake, back to the tarp and down to the stake again. If you need to be closer than that allows skip the string all together and just stake the tarp to the ground.
