Ok a heres a windy story for you folks.

My team and I had been on a two week training mission( to see how long we could observe a target without being detected). We had been getting little sleep and on that was on our stomaches laying in the mud and litter. Well we never got detected and we headed back 27 mile hump. We meet up with the trainers and gave our report. They gave us the stand down order so we got a hot meal and cold drink. I told the guys I am off the ground tonight, they all agreed. Well a storm blew in I mean it was crazy ( I dont remember wind speed), the trees were rocking hammocks swinging it was really peaceful if you can understand that. Anyway after about and hour or so one of the guys said is this safe? Of course I was worried about a branch falling on someone or me but I just did not want to be on the ground any more. I said youll be fine these are real sturdy tree. Well a bit later the trees start to groan you know how they do. Dude jumps out of his hammock scares the holy crap out of eveyone there cause we had all went to sleep. He is yelling at the top of his lungs the trees are coming down, the trees are coming down. Everyone starts laughing. Then we hear all kinds of nice words coming from him. He had stepped on a rock rolled foward and ended up breaking his arm. So we set his arm and splitted it till morning, the drugged him goofy. I had to post someone to watch him all night till evac came the next morning to get him. Because of him five others guys got little sleep. He was still out of it the next day when we loaded his butt on the bird.

===> Was working with the South Vietnamese Rangers and the Aussie guys in 1966 on a very sensitive, "black" operation. One of the ARVN Rangers had to "go" in the middle of the night, and while he was off doing his thing, something crawled across his foot, and he freaked, and started yelling, and woke everyone up. One of the Aussie guys clocked him to quiet him, and we had to carry his sorry butt for about 10K to relocate the camp. Thankfully, I hope that my next hang in NH will not have that drama!

Skypainter I know where your coming from. But that drama is memories that youll never forget. It would have been better on a training mission though.

===> You are right, Vic. I will *NEVER* forget! The nice thing about training missions, is they generally don't kill you, unless you totally screw-up! Hehehehe.....

I would say training missions dont kill ya, but had a buddies at my first duty station who one threw a gernade into a bunker and the bunker came apart now he still had some shapnel down the right side of his body. The other one decided one early morning during a drop into a LZ that he was on the ground and jumped from about 50 feet.

I was on an Op in Northern Namibia (SWA) back then in 83, originally a 14 day patrol, when we where airlifted on a puma and dropped hot, onto the 4 + tracks left by johnnies who had hit a civilian car the day before, we were a stick of of six, plus a bushman tracker, running hot.

Anyway - running down the sign, line astern - in thick, high grass, the bushman stops, starts waving his hands then flapping his arms before making a swirling (pig tail) like sweep with one arm, before turning around, and hot footing it behind a large baobab tree.

Confused and certain that we were about to come under fire I deployed the stick - only to be confronted by a rather large and extremely agitated Elephant.

Never the less, we all hot footed it after the little bushman and took fifteen minutes to settle ourselves before we continued with the the pursuit.

Meeting a large bull Ele in that situation sure brought a different perspective to our lives I can assure you.
