Got Hennessy Expedition Asym Zip for Xmas!

So I recieved this gift for xmas and It's awesome. I haven't opened it yet, but there are two things wrong with it.

    A) I am too tall for it. I'm 6'3" tall and it says it's only good for people up to 6' tall.

    B) I'm an ultra light backpacker. This thing is heavy! It is 3 lbs 2 oz on my scale. My tent only weighs about 25 oz. I thought hammocks were supposed to be lighter?

Does anyone have any sugestions for a replacement hammock? I plan on returning the Hennessy to REI.

Yes it is not the lighest hammock around market.

But that weight includes the whole packet, hammock, tarp, moscuitonet and suspensions so it is not so heavy.

There is bigger model for taller people, ofcourse it weight more.

I have been Hennessy sleeper couple years and I think that if you are lookin other manufacturer try Warbonnets Blackbird hammock and Hammockgears cubenfiber tarp

I'm 6'6" and the expedition works great for me! And yes the Hennessy hammocks are no where near the lightest! Try the Warbonnets!

Specifically, try the Warbonnet Traveler. You can build-out using it as a foundation and get a respectable weight. The Blackbirds and Ridgerunners are going to be more in line with the HHs weight-wise, although they will still probably come out ahead.

Hammocking can be lightweight. It will never be as light as sleeping under a tarp or tarptent (which I'm guessing is what you have now at 25 oz), but it will likely be infinitely more comfortable. Feeling good in the mornings will give you more miles than carrying a few ounces less weight and walking sore.
    Trust nobody!

Thinking about trying a blackbird. Id like to find a tarp that would work for a hammock and for a bivy

The HH is a great "kit". It comes with everything you need to get started, but as you said, they are a bit heavy. One of the great things about hammock camping is the ability to "tweak" to your hearts desire. I've gone through many different items looking for "my" perfect set up.

If you want to go really light, I'd suggest the Darien, or the Weight Wienie Micro. Both are very light and long enough for someone as tall as you are. As for a tarp, cuben is going to be the lightest, but you will pay for that cuben goodness. Again, there are lots of options for what you are wanting to do.

I would suggest trying to attend a local hang. It's a great opportunity to check out other peoples rigs and get some great information from those that have been at this for a while. A lot of them know what works and what doesn't.

Whatever you decide, get out there and have fun.

So, for the Bias weight weenie, I'd have to purchase a bug sock? This would just go over the entire thing?

This seems like an okay option to get started for $50 and just get the hammock. I'm a tarp tent guy and I'm not even sure about this whole hammock thing yet....
