Title says it all. One of my whoopie slings broke, and I'm wondering if I can use the cord (without the loop) for the Hennessy/figure eight lashing to suspend my hammock. Is the amsteel too slippery? Please respond soon.

I use WS in a figure 8 lashing all the time on my hammock stand. Usually the stand is not adjusted long enough for the WS to apply enough tension to my hammock, so I gain a few inches on each end by fig 8 lashing. Never had a problem so far. But it is some slippery stuff, so be extra careful and do it right. I always add at least a couple of half hitches after doing the hitch, and I also pull it real tight each time I do another "wrap" ( or whatever the correct term is ).
Check out animated knots.com. Look for buntline hitch, bury the middle on the last step instead of the end,so you can just pull the tail line to release the knot quickly. This knot holds well for me in amsteel.
Also there is a video on warbonnet outdoors that shows a strap and line suspension .the knot hes using is the same thing only i tie it a little different.
Thanks for the quick responses!

I saw the Blackbird setup video and have been using a slipped buntline hitch ever since. WAY easier, holds great.
It's been completely secure but almost too easy to undo... so if I'm out with the usual group of miscreants I'll slip a stick in the final loop ... otherwise I worry someone will yank on the loose end to undo the knot while I'm sacked out.
