Jacks R Better Mount Washington 4?

I have been researching underquilts now for the better part of a year, and I think that I may have decided on one. I want to purchase the JRB Mt. Washington 4. The only problem is that I am unsure of it's performance in extremely cold tempuratures. Since I live in north central Alberta Canada, our winter temps range from 0 celcius to -40 celcius, and can get colder with the windchill. Granted, I probably would not be sleeping in my hammock at tempuratures below -30, but you never know. So, does anyone have some advice for this northern hanger. Which underquilt should I go with? Should I even bother hanging in the winter? Any advice is good advice. Thanks.

p.s. I do not have the means to construct my own underquilt, so this is not an option.

When it gets really cold you may want to throw a pad in with you. I have a JRB Mount Washington 3 Convertible and I've been to -11F comfortably by using it with a pad.

See, I really wanted to get away from using a pad. They are so hard to keep under you at night. I love to move around when I am sleeping.

Well, as I see it, good advice. -10 f is what I will be using this uq in most of the time. -20 f. the other thirty percent. I guess I will just have to try it out. Thanks.

What is minus 30C, about minus 20F? Sounds like you will be out in that, and possibly even minus 40C ( = minus 40F? ) Plus wind chill?

Well, that is some spectacular cold all right. I have the MW4, and it is a wonderful UQ. Now some folks will be able to take any piece of gear below it's rating, and there will always be some who can not make the rating. But the rating, from the JRB website, on the MW4 is
    Temperature Rating: 0° - 5°
( that would be Fahrenheit )
So that is all you can count on until you try it for yourself to see if you can push it further, as you Canadians often can. But obviously that is not minus 40F or even minus 20F.

Sense you don't want to mess with a pad, you might can push it an additional 10 or 20F with a space blanket or vapor barrier.

Or you might consider one of the vendors who offer custom quilts to whatever temps you need.

    One other thing to consider:
    http://stores.tttrailgear.com/-strse...Pod/Detail.bok
The Polar Pod. These pods are bomb proof warmth, especially when used with enough puffy clothing or light sumer TQs to fill the gaps on top, and especially used with narrower hammocks where any top gap is minimized. You can also have down added for even more warmth. But the best thing is you can just add whatever bags or quilts and/or parkas you already have inside for whatever temps you require. The Polar Pod ( smaller model is Pea Pod ) is roomy enough to add a lot of insulation when needed. I imagine that by adding insulation, you could easily do minus 40.

    - 20 f. is -28.8888889 c. And yes, it is spectacular. Especially when the moon is full, and there is a ring around it from the ice crystals in the air. Oh, sorry I am rambling. Yes, it does get cold. I think it would be great to hang out in the poplars on a night described above, and be toasty warm. Thanks for the reply billybob. I will check the link, and give this insulation problem some more thought.

I love my MW4 UQ and use it on all my hammocks, JRB Explorer with zip mod, WBBB, JRB BMBH. Works beautifully on all and have also used this as a top quilt, super comfortable!

I've had mine to 0F very comfortably and hope to test lower...

U can always double up. On them really cold trips. I know that can get expensive. But maybe a little DIY is in order. Maybe insultex and Mt wash 4. Just a thought
