I had some damaged tent poles (a friend's kids tackled my tent), so I decided to make some toggles. They are 3" long and weigh in at about 1/3 oz. for the pair.

Nice 1!
Recycle, reuse etc. I kinda like to one on the left with the slight curve...
Thanks. Looks like I will be making more, and most of them will have some sort of curve.
Don't cut it all up. You may find other projects later...hint - tarp spreader.
Yeah, I've got a whole bin of various damaged pole bits from years working with the scouts. I PIF'd a bunch of toggles a while back and the work great. Be sure to de-burr the ends. Aluminum cuts kind of jaggedly with a pipe cutter. For a little more functionality, I drill a small whole near one end. I lash them to my whoopie with a short piece of reflective cord. This keeps them from disappearing and keeps my whoopies from pulling through (no beads on these DIY models).
Yep, definitely keep the straight sections. You can piece them back together into a nice tarp spreader or a set of "porch poles" if needed.
Yes, I did de-burr them I was also keeping them with my tent stakes just to be sure, but a thorough de-burring and cord to attach it to the whoopie is a great idea.
There aren't too many straight sections left. Both poles on the square dome where damaged, I took them apart and made one decent pole out of the best pieces, and ordered a new custom pole. That said, I will look to see what I can do with the better pieces. I do have toggles to make for two more hammocks, and I may make a fourth hammock, so everyone in the family has one.
You couldn't have been using that tent thing anyway, right?

We will have to see about that. I am supposed to do a snow trip soon and I don't have an UQ for either my son or myself yet. I also only have one winter tarp, my kelty Noah 12. Plus I am not sure if we will be above the tree line. I am hoping to get it all together and tested before the trip. We will have cars close, so I could set up the tent as a backup.
Good idea for recycling old equipment. I made my Marlin Spike toggles the same way, but used an old aluminum arrow. I cut 3" pieces on a bandsaw, deburred them then drilled a hole near one end to attach a line to.
Just remember that the Marlin Spike is there to hold the knot, not the suspension.
