    Basic Hammock Question...

Have any of you guys had any luck "going vertical"? You know, where you hang your hammock straight up and down and sleep Space Shuttle Style? Just curious.

Um, no...never even thought about trying that, haha. Is this a serious question? I would think that would be like standing up all night...not very relaxing. How would you stay in the hammock??? Strap oneself to the tree? Shug is good at acrobatics ...perhaps he's tried this. :-)

Thinking as a weight weenie, I usually just larks head a long amsteel dog bone around my ankles, throw it over a sturdy limb, hoist myself up and tie it off to a short tree strap with a trail stick MSH. If it looks like rain, I'll jamb a Golite hiker's umbrella in at the amsteel/ankle junction. I find this system works well. An added benefit is that standard mummy bags take care of any insulation needs.

As a word of caution for those of you that like to experiment with variations of a method........I tried it once "head up", but found this to be most unsatisfactory.

Lol, when I first read the OP, I honestly thought he meant hooking onto the trunk of a really wide tree haha
