    Ridge Runner spreader bar fail

Today I setup my RR to do some testing with my superfly. I used two of our fence posts to attach the RR. The posts are about 4 feet roughly. When I got in the RR the first time I had no issues. When I got in the second time the head end spreader bar bent in half and I hit the ground. Fortunately there was some snow and the only thing damaged was my ego. So I am wondering what I did wrong.I am attaching a couple pictures.

Great that you're putting it through its paces!

Fence poata? Trying something other than the spreader bars that it came with? Curious to hear more about what they were and how they failed.

Lol stupid autocorrect and I hit submit by accident. I was using the spreader bars that came with it with the 4inch extension.

HOLY COW. I've heard of the bars bending, but only when someone held onto them and used them to pull themselves further up into the hammock (Brandon at Warbonnet said he'd done so as a test).

Definitely should not happen under normal circumstances. How far apart were the posts? My only guess is that you had to set the hang angle to be too flat to keep it off the ground since the posts were only 4 feet high. Doing so would probably add more pressure to the suspension triangle and the spreader bars as a result.

You might need to hang it a bit higher than four feet and allow for more sag in the system. It doesn't need the traditional 30 degree hang angle but still should be at 20 or 25. For more on hang angles check out step 1 at this:

I'd definitely contact Brandon at Warbonnet with some details. He's a good guy and there's a chance he'll replace the poles (and would certainly do so if the break was an issue with a quality problem in the pole).

Thanks for the feedback. Yes I did have the RR flatter than I would like in order to stay off the ground. There wasnt really any sag until I got in the hammock.I was only about an inch or two above ground when I was in the hammock.

Yeah, my guess (from what I can see in the first pic) is that your hang angle was way too shallow which makes the forces go up geometrically (I think). You can enter the numbers that you have into Dejoha's hang calculator to see what your forces are looking like.

Yah, that was likely it. Hang it at more of a sagged angle (not flat before you get in) and you should be fine. Brandon might still replace the pole, especially if you send him the picture so he can help understand what's happening out there. Worth contacting him to see.

Thanks for sharing! And, glad that it didn't cause any injuries to you or to the hammock (or than the bar, of course).

My honest opinion is, and not sure of anything, but when you have the 4 inch extension in the head spreader bar, you need to have the hammock hung at least at a 25 degree angle on the suspension. Didn't I read or see somewhere that Brandon reccomended hanging the RR at a 25 degree angle? If you had the 4 inch spreader extension piece out of the head spreader bar, its alot stronger even tho its a narrower shoulder area. You only have one joint, but 2 long bars, that make the spreader bar stronger. In hanging at a 4ft height, with the spreader bar being 2 joints, the stress bent the spreader bar due to the forces applied at such a shallow flat hammock at a 4ft height. We are still learning with this new bridge hammock and what it will take as far as stress. Anybody switched out to carbon spreader bars yet? If so where did you get them?

Thanks for the feedback. I am curious to.know how ti determine the hang angle. I know iy should be between 20 and 25 for.the RR but that us fully loaded correct? What should it look like befire it is loaded? And or how do I determine the angle when I am in it and cant see the angle?

Angle is figured UN-loaded. If hung correctly most hammocks should not sag much when loaded as the suspension will already be drooped into place.
