I have had no problems with abrasions, rips, tears or any problems with defects in the material. I have two HH hex tarps for my sons. I find that they are much bigger when packed down and weigh a quite a bit more then the Superfly. With less full coverage over the tarps.
I am not sure what your concern is with it having to be "BOMB-PROOF" if you pick your locations correctly no matter which tarp you use. you should not have any problems from low lying branches or debris falling. Hope this helps.
Well my site picking isn't nearly as refined as many of yours. So I'd hate to see an error on my part , ruin a pretty sweet tarp or because that tarp is fragile my hammock and I! I haven't noticed the hex tarps packed size because I haven't had the opportunity to compare it. Ill need to do that soon. I do have a silnylon poncho and the material just seems so flimsy haha! But I haven't looked up what kind of nylon it is!

    Zing, love it!
    On a serious note:
A lot of people are for the superfly, I may have to look into that one more. I know he makes good hammocks but never really considered his tarps.

Not at all. Those that know me, know I am rather easy going and things don't rile me at all. Just trying to be helpful as I was right from the start. So, if you tell us what your needs are, then maybe we can be more helpful.

Haha ya by all means... I've posted plenty of times and you've offered valuable advice... This time around I'm looking for a different set of information. Knowing that theirs plenty out there but not knowing what to look for is a pain in the ***!

Hell I own 5 hammocks and 2 sets of insulation but I had a better idea of my needs in the get go, bought them then bought stuff that interested me. This time around not so much haha. I have what I need now I want help, of a kind, to find stuff I'm interested in!

Well.. it is pretty much a win-win here... Many choices of top of the line gear..
I might suggest paying closer attention to site selection though, warmth and dry factors....not to mention widow makers, that will ruin even the toughest of tarps and lives for that matter......Good luck..
We would be one step closer to world peace, if everyone slept in a hammock..

When I saw this thread, my first instinct was "don't feed the trolls," but if you really want an opinion, I've used my hennessy sil hex tarp for 5 years without any tears. Like NCPatrick, my sealing tape peeled off, but that was after I re-coated the material. Nothing a few minutes with silicone caulk couldn't fix.

That, by the way, is a huge point in sil's favor--re-coating is not an option with urethane-coated fabric.

My JRB 11x10 has served me well over the past 3 years also. I like it because I can close the ends to block wind in winter. Recently I added another Grizz beak to my gear so I can now "close the doors" on my hex as well.

Anyway, use what you like and like what you use. Feel free to just ask a gear question. You don't need to trick anyone around here into giving you information. In fact, if you do it much you may find it backfires.
