Any penalty for a double layer hammock?

I had/have no clue what I am doing, but I want to try out a hammock. I got some discounted rip stop from Field's Fabrics but I have no idea what weight it is. Should I just make a single layer gathered end hammock first and see if it hold 220lbs or go straight for the 2 layer? I bought enough of the rip stop to make a 2 layer hammock and then sew together a tarp and turn it into sil-nylon.

Quick way to figure out what you have is to:

    1. multiply the width by the length to get the area of the fabric
    2. Divide by 1296 (number of square inches in a square yard)
    3. Weight the entire bit of fabric
    4. Divide weight by the number of square yards you have

If it is 1.5oz or higher a single layer should be plenty comfortable. People weighing more than 220lbs have slept in single layer 1.0 hammocks, it's just a matter of how comfortable you are with how much it stretches.

Welcome. I'd try to find out what nylon you have. For your 1st diy hammock I'd try doing a single layer. Double won't be much different, but...

Catavarie nailed it for structural integrity.
An additional consideration is whether you are going to use an under quilt or foam pads. For the pad option, you'll want a double layer hammock.

Thank you so much for the warm welcome and the calculator. I will try it single layer first. If I fall through, well I have a lot of tarp material.

Papasmurf also has a chart that tells which weight fabric and how much weight it is good for, his Comfort chart. Once you figure out what weight fabric you have, you can tell whether you need a single or double layer. At your weight, a single in 1.1 will be close.

I weigh more than you, (about 235), and have a 1.5oz, then went to a 1.9oz, fabric from Joanns. Just didn't feel comfortable, always would get it hanging right to start, but I think the fabric would stretch over night, and by 2 or 3 in the morning, I was uncomfortable. So I ordered some 1.1 and made a double layer. No stretch, it feels the same waking up as when I went to sleep. A little experimenting is all it took. The biggest penalty is the extra weight when carrying, but it isn't much more than a 1.9 single. Good luck in your search......RR

A few people have to fall so we can figure out what works and what doesn't.
Seriously. I'm guessing you'll be just fine.

Set it low and put a couple of couch cushions under it. If it holds give it a few bounces. If it still holds take it down and give it a complete inspection. happy hanging.
